A pool pump that trips its breaker is drawing more current than the circuit allows — or leaking current to ground. This guide ranks the causes and explains the one safe thing to try. 1. Failing Start Capacitor
A weak capacitor makes the motor strain at startup and pull excess current until the breaker lets go — the classic trip a few seconds after the pump starts. It often overlaps with a pump that hums but won't start.
- Note whether the trip comes seconds after startup — that pattern points here.
2. Shorted Motor Windings
Years of heat cycling eventually break down the insulation on the motor windings. Once windings short, the motor pulls fault-level current and the breaker trips immediately, every time. There's no reset that fixes this.
- If the breaker trips instantly on every reset, stop resetting — that's the signature.
3. Ground Fault From Moisture
A failed shaft seal letting pool water into the motor — or rain and irrigation spray finding its way in — leaks current to ground, and a GFCI breaker trips on it by design. If the tripping started right after a storm, this is the prime suspect.
- Note whether the tripping began after rain or sprinkler changes.
- Reset the breaker once and note how long it holds.
4. Undersized or Aged Breaker
Breakers weaken with age and heat, and a circuit that was marginal to begin with can start nuisance-tripping under a normal pump load. It's a real cause — but it's a diagnosis of exclusion, made only after the motor itself checks out.
- Make sure nothing else shares the pump's circuit.
5. Bound or Seized Rotor
A rotor locked by debris or seized bearings makes the motor pull locked-rotor current — several times its normal draw — and the breaker trips fast. This usually announces itself first as grinding noise or a hum with no spin.
- Note any grinding or humming that preceded the tripping.
