Circulation Is The Symptom, Not The Fault
Poor circulation is the complaint that brings most plumbing calls in, and it is almost never one thing. Flow is the end result of everything between the skimmer and the returns: the skimmer throat, the suction line, the pump basket and lid seal, the impeller, the filter, the valves and the return plumbing. Any one of them can throttle the whole system, and replacing the pump because the water is not moving is an expensive way to find that out.
We work the system in order. Pressure at the filter, flow at the returns, behaviour of the pump basket, and the state of every valve in the run. That sequence usually identifies the restriction within the first visit, and it means the repair addresses what is actually wrong rather than the most visible component.
Valves And Fittings
Diverter valves are the most-touched part of a pool and the least maintained. The internals wear, the seals harden, and eventually the valve either will not seal between ports or will not turn without force. Both are usually rebuildable — the body outlasts the internals by years — and a rebuild is a fraction of the cost of cutting a valve out of a tight run.
Fittings fail differently. Glued joints in Florida sun and ground movement work loose over decades, and the failure is often a weep rather than a burst — enough to lose water and pull air, not enough to be obvious. Those show up on a pressure test long before they show up as a puddle.
Skimmer Throats And Cracks
Skimmers take the worst of it. They sit at the waterline where the shell moves, they get hit by anything that floats, and the plastic is exposed to sun on one side and water on the other for thirty years. Cracks in the throat, splits around the faceplate and separation where the skimmer meets the shell are all common, and all leak straight into the ground where you cannot see them.
Repairs in place cover most of it. Where the body itself has failed below the waterline the deck has to come up around it, and we will say so plainly rather than patching something that will be back in a season.
When Excavation Is Actually Needed
Digging is the last resort, not the first quote. A line that has failed under a deck can often be located precisely, and depending on where it runs, re-routing can cost less and disturb less than excavating the original. Where excavation is genuinely the answer, you get told what will be opened, what it will take to put it back, and what the whole thing costs before anyone starts.

How do I know if it is a plumbing problem or the pump?
The quickest test is the pump basket. If it will not stay full of water, or you can see air swirling in it while the pump runs, the fault is on the suction side — a line, a fitting, a valve or the skimmer — and not the pump itself. A pump that primes fine but moves little water usually points at the discharge side or the filter instead.
Do you have to dig up my deck to fix a broken line?
Often not. Where a line has failed at a fitting or inside the equipment pad, the repair is above ground. Where it has failed under the deck, we locate it precisely first with pressure testing rather than opening concrete to look, and in some cases the line can be abandoned and re-routed for less disruption than excavating it.
My skimmer is cracked. Does the whole thing need replacing?
It depends where the crack is. A cracked throat or a split at the faceplate can usually be repaired in place. A skimmer body that has cracked below the waterline is leaking into the ground and generally needs replacing, which does mean opening the deck around it.
Why does my pool lose water only when the pump runs?
That points at the pressure side of the plumbing. When the pump is off the leak is not under pressure and slows or stops. Losing water only when the pump is off suggests the suction side instead. Which way round it behaves is genuinely useful information, so it is worth watching before you call.
Can you fix valves without replacing all the plumbing?
Yes. Diverter valves are rebuildable in most cases — the internals wear long before the body does. Where a valve body has been glued into an awkward run, we will tell you honestly whether rebuilding or replacing the section makes more sense.
