Jandy Variable-Speed Pump Error Codes Explained

This guide covers the drive fault codes a Jandy VS FloPro or ePump shows on the JEP-R controller or in iAquaLink — E22, E23, E2E, E2F and connection faults — and what's safe to check yourself. Several of them are wiring problems, and we're the Pinellas County company licensed for the electrical side of these repairs (EC13011994, CPC1459998).

E22 — DC bus over-voltage

The drive is seeing supply voltage that's too high or unstable. Causes include a genuinely high or fluctuating supply, wiring issues, or — on automated pools — an interaction with older AquaLink RS board revisions.

Try this first:

  • Power-cycle the pump: off at the breaker, wait 5 minutes, back on.
If that doesn't clear it: voltage correction, wire-gauge checks and board-revision verification are electrician work — this is an electrical repair. Stop here.

E23 — DC bus under-voltage (the undersized-wiring code)

The drive is being starved of voltage. Per the common field references for Jandy VS drives, the most frequent real-world cause is undersized wire on a long run between the panel and the pad — #10 AWG is the recommendation beyond roughly 100 feet — followed by loose connections and utility sag. This is the code we see most on older Pinellas homes where the pool was added far from the main panel and the original wiring was never upsized.

Try this first:

  • Power-cycle the pump once.
  • Note whether the code appears when other big loads (A/C, dryer) kick on — that detail helps the diagnosis.
If that doesn't clear it: a wiring upgrade sized to the run is licensed electrical work — our core trade. Stop here.

E2E — Drive overheat

The drive electronics have exceeded their temperature limit. In full Florida sun the usual causes are poor ventilation, direct sun exposure, clogged heatsink fins, or blocked clearance around the sides and rear of the pump.

Try this first:

  • Clear vegetation and stored items away from the pump.
  • Add shade over the equipment pad if the drive bakes in afternoon sun.
  • With power OFF at the breaker, hose accumulated dirt off the exterior heatsink fins.
If it keeps overheating after that: drive service — this is an electrical repair. Stop here.

E2F — Motor phase fault

The drive has detected a fault in one of the motor phases — an internal motor/drive problem. Field references note condensation in high-humidity climates as a contributor, with Florida cited explicitly.

Try this first:

  • One 5-minute power cycle at the breaker.
If the code returns immediately: motor/drive assembly replacement — this is an electrical repair. Stop here.

FAULT: PUMP NOT CONNECTED — controller can't reach the pump

The JEP-R controller has lost RS-485 communication with the pump. Typical causes are broken or miswired comm cable (the red/black/yellow/green order matters), corroded connections, or an incorrect DIP-switch address.

Try this first:

  • Power-cycle both the controller and the pump.
If that doesn't clear it: comm wiring and DIP switches live inside energized enclosures — this is an electrical repair. Stop here.

Pump Problems Without a Code

Pump enabled on the panel, but the motor never spins

If the automation or controller says the pump is on but the motor never turns, the likely culprit is a failed drive board rather than the motor itself.

Try this first:

  • Power-cycle once at the breaker and confirm the breaker itself hasn't tripped.
If that doesn't clear it: drive-board diagnosis is live electrical work — stop here.

Pump won't prime

A pump that runs but won't catch prime usually has a suction-side air leak — most often the pump lid o-ring — or sits too high above water level.

Try this first:

  • With the pump off, remove the lid, clean and re-seat the lid o-ring, and refill the pump pot with water.
  • Confirm the pool water level is up and suction valves are open.
If that doesn't clear it: suction-side leak diagnosis is a pro repair — stop here.

Why Homeowners Across Pinellas Call Us for Jandy Pumps

  • E23 is usually a wiring problem, not a pump problem (EC13011994): Undersized wire on a long run starves the drive. A pool tech can only swap parts; we're licensed to actually upsize the circuit that's causing the fault.
  • We diagnose drive vs. motor vs. supply before you buy anything: Voltage faults, phase faults and comm faults each point to a different fix — measuring which one is live electrical diagnosis we do in-house.
  • Florida heat and humidity are hard on drives (CPC1459998): Sun-baked pads drive E2E overheats and humid summers contribute to E2F condensation faults. We fix the installation conditions, not just the error of the day.
