Every fault message a Hayward TriStar VS, MaxFlo VS, Super Pump VS, or EcoStar drive can throw — Prime Failed, PFC-Hi, Drive Overheated, Motor Phase Lost — decoded, with the safe checks first. Unlike heaters, Hayward's VS drives mostly show plain-English messages on the display rather than two-letter codes. One exception: when a TriStar VS is wired to a Hayward automation control, some faults surface as numeric codes — 64 (DC voltage low) and 65 (DC voltage high) are covered below under DC voltage faults.
Prime Failed — Couldn't Establish Prime in 15 Minutes
The pump ran its priming routine for 15 minutes without moving enough water. Usual causes: low water level, a loose pump lid or dried-out lid o-ring letting air in, a suction-side air leak, a closed suction valve, or a clogged skimmer line.
Try this first:
- Top up the pool water level.
- Empty the skimmer and pump baskets.
- Reseat the pump lid and lube its o-ring with pool lube so it seals.
- Open every suction-side valve.
- Retry the prime.
Drive Is Overheated / Heat Sink Overheat
The drive electronics exceeded their safe temperature. In Florida this is often exactly what it sounds like: debris packed into the cooling fins or fan, a too-tight enclosure (the drive wants roughly 12" of rear clearance), or direct Florida sun beating on the drive all afternoon.
Try this first:
- Turn the pump off at the breaker first.
- Clear leaves and debris from the fan and cooling fins.
- Make sure the drive has ventilation clearance and, ideally, shade.
- Restore power.
PFC-Hi — Incoming Voltage Spike (Not a Pump Defect)
Per Hayward's own technical service bulletin, PFC-Hi means the drive detected a spike in incoming AC voltage — above roughly 280 VAC — and latched itself off to protect its electronics. Read that again: the pump is fine; your power isn't. Around Tampa Bay, the lightning capital of the country, supply-side surges are a fact of life for pool equipment.
Try this first:
- Reset the drive by cycling its breaker off and on.
- If it recurs frequently, note when it happens (storms? evenings?) — that pattern points at supply-power quality.
DC Voltage Too High / Too Low (Codes 65 / 64 via Automation)
The incoming power is outside the drive's safe window — roughly 207–253 VAC on 230 V models (EcoStar also flags "AC Mains Low" below about 185 VAC). Causes are undersized wire for the run to the pad, loose lugs, or utility voltage problems. Through Hayward automation these show as numeric code 64 (low) or 65 (high).
Try this first:
- Cycle the breaker once. That's the only safe check.

Pool Pump Repair & InstallationDrive Overload / Over Current
The motor is drawing more current than it should. The classic cause is a jammed impeller — debris or pebbles that got past the basket — but failing bearings, a leaking shaft seal, or a drive fault can do it too.
Try this first:
- Power off at the breaker, then clean the pump basket.
- Nothing further — do not open the wet-end housing.
Pump Has Stalled / Drive Failed to Start
The motor failed to spin up after its start attempts (typically three). That usually means a seized shaft, water intrusion into the drive, or loose motor leads — and it's usually a motor/drive replacement decision.
Try this first:
- One breaker cycle. If it stalls again, stop and call.
Motor Phase Lost — Internal Winding Failure
One of the motor's winding phases is gone — water ingress, a failed winding, or a failed drive transistor. This is an internal hardware failure; power cycling won't fix it, and there are no homeowner steps.
Memory Failure — Drive Control Memory Fault
The drive's control memory has failed (seen on EcoStar). Like any board-level fault, one power cycle rules out a glitch; if it survives that, the board is done.
Try this first:
- One power cycle.
Check System — Generic Protective Stop
A catch-all: the drive stopped itself for voltage out of range, overcurrent, overheat, or a stall — often after several automatic restart attempts. Your job is to give the tech context.

- Cycle the breaker once and watch for a more specific message.
Warning No Comm / Blank Display
The display and drive aren't communicating, or the display isn't getting power at all. The comm and display wiring lives inside the wired drive enclosure.

- Confirm the breaker is on. Nothing else.
SVRS Tripped — Suction Safety Activated (SVRS Models)
The Safety Vacuum Release System detected a suction anomaly — a possible blockage or entrapment condition. SVRS is a life-safety system: treat a repeat trip as a real warning, not a nuisance.
Try this first:
- Check and clean the skimmer and pump baskets and the filter.
- Visually confirm all drain covers are intact and in place.
Pump Keeps Tripping the Breaker
A pump that immediately re-trips its breaker has a wiring fault, a failing drive, or a GFCI compatibility/sensitivity problem — and every reset shoves fault current through the same damaged spot.
Try this first:
- Do NOT keep resetting a breaker that immediately trips again. Leave it off and call.
