Retrofitting An Existing Pool
Almost every pool in Pinellas old enough to need a light change was built for an incandescent fixture in a standard niche, and that is good news: the current generation of LED retrofits is built to drop into those same niches. The lamp draws a fraction of the power, runs far cooler, and lasts long enough that changing it stops being a recurring job.
What we check before quoting is the part nobody sees. The niche itself, the condition of the conduit run back to the junction box, the cord and its seal, and the bonding. Those are what determine whether a retrofit is a straightforward swap or a job that needs work behind the wall first, and finding out afterwards is how a simple light change becomes a bad week.
Colour Systems
Colour changing fixtures have got considerably better and considerably cheaper. On a single-light residential pool the premium over a white LED is modest, and the effect is the difference between a pool you can see and a pool that looks like something. Where there is more than one fixture, or lighting in a spa as well, synchronising them matters — mismatched colour across two lights looks worse than white.
Bonding, And Why It Comes Up Here
Everything conductive around a pool has to be bonded together so that no voltage difference can exist between the water, the deck, the ladder and the equipment. Lighting sits right in the middle of that, because the niche is metal, it is in the water, and it is fed by a circuit.
A pool light that trips its GFCI is very often the first symptom of a bonding or moisture problem rather than a dead lamp — and a GFCI that trips is doing exactly its job. We test the circuit and the bonding before recommending a fixture, because a new light on a faulty niche will trip in the same way and you will have paid for it twice.
Deck, Step And Surround Lighting
Lighting the water alone leaves you with a bright pool in a dark yard, which is neither attractive nor especially safe. Step lights, low-level deck fixtures and washes on the planting around the deck are what make the space usable after dark, and they are low voltage — a transformer, buried feeds and fixtures chosen for salt exposure.
That work overlaps entirely with landscape lighting, so it is usually quoted together where the two meet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put an LED light in my old pool without draining it?
In most cases yes. Modern LED retrofits are made to fit the standard niches that have been in use for decades, and the fixture is changed with the water level just below the niche rather than the pool emptied. The exception is a niche that has corroded or a conduit run that has failed, which has to be dealt with first.
Is colour changing worth it, or is white fine?
Honestly, it depends whether you use the pool at night. Colour systems are genuinely good and the cost difference on a single fixture is not large. If the pool is lit for safety rather than atmosphere, a good white LED does the job for less and there is nothing wrong with that answer.
My pool light trips the breaker. Is that the light?
Usually not, and this is the most important thing on this page. A pool light that trips a GFCI is far more often a failing niche, a water-filled conduit, a deteriorated cord or a bonding fault than a failed lamp. Replacing the fixture without finding the cause spends money and leaves the fault in place.
Can new lights work with my existing automation?
Generally yes. Most current colour systems will take commands from the major automation platforms, and where a fixture and a controller genuinely will not talk to each other, we will tell you before anything is bought rather than after.
What about lighting the deck and steps, not just the water?
That is usually where the bigger visual difference is. Step lights, low-level deck lighting and washes on the surrounding planting turn a lit pool into a usable space at night. It is low voltage work with a transformer, buried feeds and fixtures rated for the environment.
