Older Pinellas Homes Have Older Wiring
A huge share of the housing stock in Largo, Seminole, Clearwater, and across Pinellas County was built in the 1950s through the 1980s — and much of it is still running on its original wiring. Wiring systems from those eras were built for a fraction of today's electrical demand, and several of them carry known safety issues that insurers and inspectors now flag on sight. Aluminum Wiring Remediation
Homes built or expanded from the mid-1960s through the 1970s were often wired with aluminum branch circuits — and aluminum wiring is the single most common wiring issue we find in Pinellas homes of that era. Aluminum expands, contracts, and oxidizes at connection points in ways copper does not, which loosens terminations over time and creates heat exactly where you can't see it. Insurers know this, and many will not write or renew a policy on a home with unremediated aluminum branch wiring. Depending on the home, remediation ranges from approved connector retrofits at every termination to full replacement of the aluminum circuits with copper. Knob-and-Tube & Cloth-Insulated Wiring
In the county's oldest homes we still find knob-and-tube wiring and cloth-insulated conductors. Cloth insulation dries out, cracks, and flakes off with age — especially in Florida attics, where decades of heat accelerate the breakdown — leaving energized conductors effectively bare. Neither system can be meaningfully "repaired."
