Hayward AquaRite Codes & Lights: No Flow, Check Salt, Inspect Cell

Every AquaRite LED and display message decoded — No Flow, Check Salt, Inspect Cell, HOT, COLD, and -PCB- — plus the safe checks that fix most of them. We're the Pinellas County company licensed for the electrical side of salt-system repair (CPC1459998 · EC13011994 · LI4527).

Two numbers to keep in mind, straight from Hayward's diagnostics manual: the AquaRite wants salt between 2,700 and 3,400 ppm, ideally 3,200 ppm, and it stops generating when water gets cold (roughly below 50–60°F depending on model) — which happens even here in Florida in winter. Also worth knowing: pressing the diagnostic button steps through pool temp, cell voltage, cell current, output %, instant salinity, product name, software revision, and cell type. A healthy cell shows about 22–25 volts while generating, and the configured cell type must match the cell that's actually installed or every reading will be wrong.

No Flow — Flow Switch Not Seeing Water Movement

The flow switch isn't detecting adequate water movement, so chlorine generation stops as a safety measure. It's normal for about 60 seconds at pump start and any time the pump is off — a steady No Flow with the pump running means the water genuinely isn't moving well, or the switch can't tell that it is.

Try this first:

  • Confirm the pump is actually running and fully primed.
  • Clean or backwash the filter.
  • Empty the skimmer and pump baskets.
  • Check valve positions — a spa-mode diverter is a classic cause.
  • Visually check that the flow-switch cable is plugged into the box and undamaged. Look only — don't rewire.
If that doesn't clear it: replacing or repositioning the flow switch means cutting into the plumbing, and wiring repairs belong to a licensed tech — stop here.

Check Salt — Low (or Misread) Salinity

Flashing (together with a flashing Inspect Cell) means salt is marginal — around 2,500–2,600 ppm — and generation continues at reduced efficiency. Solid (with a solid Inspect Cell) means the unit reads salt below roughly 2,300 ppm and has stopped generating. Here's the trap: an old or scaled cell reads salt artificially low, so the light can lie.

Try this first:

  • Test the salt independently — test strips or a free pool-store test — before adding any salt.
  • If salt is truly low (rain dilution, splash-out, and backwashing all drag it down), add pool salt toward 3,200 ppm.
  • If the store test says salt is fine, the cell likely needs cleaning or is near end of life — see Inspect Cell below.

High Salt — Salinity or Amperage Above Limits

Salinity (or cell amperage) is above the unit's limits, so it stops generating to protect the cell. That's either genuine over-salting, or a configuration problem — a unit configured for a T-15 cell with a smaller cell installed will over-read.

Try this first:

  • Independently test the salt level first.
  • If it's genuinely high, the only fix is partially draining and refilling with fresh water.
If that doesn't clear it: cell-type reconfiguration and amperage diagnosis are pro work — stop here.

Inspect Cell — Maintenance Timer or Scaled/Depleted Cell

Flashing means the 500-hour maintenance timer expired — a scheduled reminder, not a fault. Solid means the unit can't push the target current through the cell and believes it's scaled or depleted. Salt cells are consumables: typical life is 3–5+ seasons.

Try this first:

  • With the pump off and the system off, unscrew the cell at its union fittings (hand tools, no wiring involved) and look through it.
  • If the plates show white scale, clean per Hayward's instructions: a diluted muriatic acid soak — always acid into water, gloves and eye protection, outdoors — or a commercial cell cleaner.
  • Reinstall the cell, then hold the diagnostic button 3–5 seconds to reset the maintenance timer.
  • Not comfortable handling acid? Completely fair — we clean cells as a service.
If a clean cell with correct salt still shows a solid Inspect Cell: confirming depletion vs. a board fault takes voltage and current readings inside the wired unit — a sealed-component/electrical diagnosis. Stop here.

Power LED Off — No Power to the Unit

The unit isn't getting power. There is exactly one safe homeowner check for this one.

Try this first:

  • Check the breaker feeding the unit. That's it.
If that doesn't clear it: the 20 A fuse on the main circuit board and input-voltage verification are inside the wired enclosure — this is an electrical repair. Stop here.

Generating LED Flashing — Water Too Cold (Not a Fault)

The water temperature is outside the generating range — almost always cold water in winter, which is common even in Florida. Nothing is broken; the unit is protecting the cell.

Try this first:

  • Nothing is required. Super Chlorinate mode can temporarily override the cold cutoff.
  • Consider supplementing with liquid chlorine during the cold months.
If it flashes when the water clearly isn't cold, the cell's temperature sensor may be misreading — see COLD below. Sensor verdicts are pro work; stop here.

COLD — Water Below ~50°F (or a Misreading Sensor)

The display says the water is below about 50°F. In January, believe it. If it's displayed when the water obviously isn't cold, the temperature sensor inside the cell is misreading.

Try this first:

  • If the water genuinely might be that cold, wait it out — this is normal winter behavior.
  • If not, clean the cell (see Inspect Cell) — scale can skew the sensor.
If COLD persists on a clean cell in warm water, the in-cell sensor has failed and the cell needs replacing — a sealed-component repair. Stop here.

HOT — Almost Always a Failed Cell Sensor

HOT means the unit reads water above about 140°F — and real 140°F pool water doesn't happen. Per Inyo's reading of the Hayward diagnostics, this is almost always a failed or shorted temperature sensor inside the cell, and there is no override for HOT.

Try this first:

  • Power-cycle once to rule out a glitch. There's no user-side fix beyond that.
If HOT returns: the sensor is part of the sealed cell — cell replacement and configuration is a sealed-component repair. Stop here.

-PCB- — Main Board Fault

The unit's self-test has detected a fault on its main printed circuit board — usually shown with all four red/yellow LEDs lit at once. This is the board telling you it's the problem.

Try this first:

  • Power-cycle at the breaker once.
If -PCB- returns: main board replacement inside a line-voltage enclosure — this is an electrical repair. Stop here.

0 Cell Amps — Voltage Present, No Current

In the diagnostic readout, normal voltage with zero amps means no current is flowing through the cell: a depleted or badly scaled cell, an unplugged cell cord, or a board current-sensing fault.

Try this first:

  • Check that the cell cord is plugged in snugly at the cell. That's the only safe check.
If that doesn't clear it: distinguishing a dead cell from a dead board is electrical diagnosis — stop here.
