Pool Light Not Working: What's Safe to Check (and What Never Is)

A pool light that won't turn on mixes the two things that should never mix: water and electricity. This page covers the three checks that are safe to make from dry land, the causes a licensed electrician looks for, and why everything else on this list is off-limits. Read this before anything else: never open, reseat, rewire, or change the bulb in a pool light yourself. The CPSC identifies electrocution from faulty pool wiring, bonding, and lighting among the leading causes of pool electrical fatalities. A light that stopped working — or worse, one that trips the GFCI — may be signaling water inside the fixture or a compromised bond, and that GFCI is the only device standing between the fault and a swimmer.

The Only Checks That Are Safe to Make

All three of these happen on dry land, away from the water. This section is deliberately short — with a pool light, safe diagnosis ends here.

  • Press TEST, then RESET on the GFCI protecting the light circuit — once. If it trips again, stop resetting it.
  • Check the breaker panel for a tripped or half-tripped breaker on the pool circuit.
  • Confirm the switch, relay, or automation system is actually calling the light on (a schedule or app toggle is a surprisingly common culprit).
If the GFCI trips again after one reset: stop, and keep everyone out of the pool until the circuit is inspected. A GFCI that keeps tripping is doing its job — it may be detecting a real fault path into the water.

The Six Causes — and Why They're a Licensed Electrician's Job

1. Tripped GFCI — Sometimes a Symptom, Not the Problem

The most common and most misunderstood cause. Yes, GFCIs occasionally nuisance-trip — Florida lightning season sees to that. But a GFCI protecting a pool light can also be tripping because current is genuinely leaking toward the water. Repeatedly resetting it to "get the light back" defeats the one device designed to protect swimmers.

  • One TEST/RESET cycle, as above. That's the entire homeowner scope.

2. Burned-Out Lamp or Failed LED Driver

The most benign cause — the lamp or the LED driver inside the fixture has simply reached end of life. But there is no safe homeowner version of a pool light bulb change: on a wet-niche light, the fixture has to be removed from the niche, opened, resealed, and pressure-checked. An improper reseal quietly guarantees the next fault happens underwater.

3. Water Inside the Fixture (Failed Lens Gasket)

Lens gaskets age, and once water gets past one, it corrodes the lamp contacts and eventually creates the exact fault the GFCI exists to catch. Visible condensation or water sloshing behind the lens is a stop-swimming-now finding, not a watch-and-wait one.

4. Corroded Splice in the Junction Box

The light's cord runs to a junction box behind the pool deck, and in Pinellas County's salt air those splices corrode faster than almost anywhere else in the country. A corroded splice can present as a dead light, a flickering light, or a tripping GFCI.

5. Failed Switch, Relay, or Automation Output

If the light is run through an automation system, the relay that switches it is a wear item. Beyond confirming the app or switch is actually calling for the light (the safe check above), diagnosing a relay means opening a panel that also carries 230 V equipment circuits.

6. Broken Bond or Ground Path — The Invisible One

The most dangerous cause is the one you can't see. The bonding grid ties every metal component around the pool to the same electrical potential; a broken bond can let stray voltage into the water with no visible symptom at all until someone feels a tingle. Bonding verification requires test equipment and a licensed electrician per NEC 680.
