Pentair IntelliChlor Lights: What Every Color & Flash Means

Every light and flash pattern on a Pentair IntelliChlor salt cell (IC15, IC20, IC40, IC60) — what it means, which ones are normal, and what's safe to check yourself. First, how to read the panel

The five green sanitizer output LEDs are a bar graph of your output setting — 20–100% shows solid LEDs, while a 2–10% setting shows a single blinking LED, which is normal and not a fault. All five lights scrolling in sequence means Boost / Superchlorinate mode (100% output for 24 hours) — cancel it by holding "More" + "Less" together. The flow, salt and cell lights are the ones that report problems, covered below. When everything shows green with solid output LEDs, the cell is making chlorine normally.

Red FLOW light — production stopped, no flow detected

The flow switch doesn't see enough water moving through the cell, so chlorine production has stopped. Usual causes: the pump is off or on low speed, a dirty filter, full baskets, air in the system, or debris on the switch paddle.

Try this first:

  • Verify the pump is running at an adequate speed
  • Clean the filter
  • Empty the skimmer and pump baskets
  • Production resumes on its own when flow returns
If the light stays red with good flow: flow-switch replacement is an electrical repair — stop here.

Solid red LOW SALT — salinity in the low band

Salinity has dropped into the low band; the cell still produces, but at reduced efficiency. Rain and backwash dilution, splash-out, or an aging cell's drifting salt reading are the usual causes — Florida summer downpours dilute salt pools surprisingly fast.

Try this first:

  • Test the salt independently — test strips or a pool-store water sample — before adding anything
  • Add salt calculated for your pool volume, targeting roughly 3,400 ppm
  • Run the pump 24 hours before re-reading the panel
If the panel still reads low after an independent test confirms 3,200+ ppm: the cell's reading has drifted — recalibration and cell evaluation are professional work, stop here.

Flashing red LOW / VERY LOW SALT — production stopped

Salinity read below the cutoff, so the cell has stopped producing chlorine entirely and the CELL light goes blank. It may be genuinely low salt — but cold water reads as lower salinity, and a worn cell under-reads too, so don't dump salt in on the panel's word alone.

Try this first:

  • Independent salt test first, always
  • Add only the calculated amount of salt for your pool volume
  • Allow 24 hours of circulation before judging the reading
If the reading stays wrong after a verified salt level: the cell is likely nearing end of life (typically 3–5 years) — evaluation and replacement are professional work, stop here.

Flashing green salt light — salt too high

Salinity is above the high end of the operating band, usually from over-salting or evaporation concentrating the water. Confirm with an independent test; a partial drain-and-refill dilutes it — and in a Florida summer, rain often fixes it for you.

Green and red salt lights flashing together — inconsistent readings

The unit is getting confused salinity readings — scale on the cell blades, a big temperature swing, or failing cell electronics.

Try this first:

  • Run an independent salt test
  • Look through the cell's clear body for white flaky scale deposits

Flashing green CELL / STATUS light — "inspect cell"

The unit is asking for the cell blades to be checked for calcium scale or debris. Calcium buildup is very common with Florida's hard fill water, and the light also comes on automatically after about 500 hours of run time as a maintenance reminder.

Try this first:

  • Look through the cell's clear body for white, flaky deposits between the plates — that visual check is completely safe
Acid-washing the cell uses diluted muriatic acid — we recommend leaving the chemical handling to us. If cleaning doesn't clear the light, stop here.

Red COLD WATER light — normal winter behavior

Water temperature is below the production threshold (around 52°F), so chlorine output is suspended to protect the cell. Nothing is wrong — this is normal protective behavior even in a Pinellas winter. Supplement with liquid chlorine until the water warms back up.

No lights at all — cell not receiving power

The cell isn't getting power or communication — a power-center fuse, transformer, damaged cable, or an automation COM LINK failure.

Try this first:

  • Confirm the power center's power switch and breaker are on
If that doesn't restore it: fuse and board work inside the power center is an electrical repair — stop here.
