Pentair Automation & ScreenLogic Troubleshooting Guide

Fault messages on Pentair EasyTouch, IntelliTouch and IntelliCenter panels — plus the ScreenLogic and app connection problems you can safely fix yourself. We're Perfect Catch in Largo, the Pinellas County company licensed for the electrical work inside these load centers (EC13011994, CPC1459998).

Panel Fault Messages

A useful rule of thumb from the field: connectivity problems are usually router or IP issues you can safely reset yourself — but anything showing an actual fault message on the outdoor panel lives inside an energized load center, which is licensed-electrician territory.

COM LINK ERROR — panel lost the salt cell

The EasyTouch or IntelliTouch panel lost communication with the IntelliChlor salt cell or its power center. Causes: a damaged or loose 4-wire cable from the cell to the motherboard, a corroded connector, or a failed power-center board.

Try this first:

• Power-cycle the panel breaker once

Comm Error — no pump communication

The automation lost RS-485 communication with an IntelliFlo or other VS pump. Loose or reversed green/yellow comm wires, cable damage (landscapers and rodents), electrical noise, or a failed port are the usual causes. Seeing pump-side alarms too? See our IntelliFlo & SuperFlo VS alarm code guide.

Try this first:

• Power-cycle the panel and the pump once

"No Comm" / "Address Lock" — remote panel can't reach the main board

A wired EasyTouch remote or indoor panel can't talk to the main board, or two devices are conflicting on the same address — typically an RS-485 wiring fault to the remote, or an address conflict after adding a device.

Try this first:

• Power-cycle once

Air Err — air temperature sensor fault

The ambient air sensor circuit is open or shorted — an unplugged or damaged sensor on the board, or corrosion. The sensor is inside the enclosure, so there's nothing safe to check beyond noting the message.

Water Err / Water Sensor Error — water temperature misreading

The water temperature sensor has faulted, so heater control and temperature displays misread — usually a failed or miswired thermistor at the plumbing.

Try this first:

• Note whether the displayed water temp is obviously wrong (32°F in July, say) — useful detail for the tech

Solar Err — solar temperature sensor fault

The solar temp sensor (only relevant if solar heating is configured) has failed or its wire is cut — commonly a failed roof sensor. Nothing safe to check.

Equipment turning on by itself at night — usually not a fault

Pentair panels run pumps (and rotate valves) automatically when air temperature nears about 36°F — that's freeze protection doing its job, not a malfunction. Don't kill the breaker in cold weather. But if it triggers on a 70°F night, the air sensor is suspect and that's a service call.

Circuits stuck on after a power interruption

Freeze-protect and aux states can come back inconsistent after an outage catches the panel mid-cycle.

Try this first:

• One clean power cycle of the panel breaker

ScreenLogic & App Connection Problems

These are not equipment faults — the pool keeps running its schedules. They're network problems, and most have a safe DIY fix.

"Looking for controller…" for more than a minute

The app can't reach the ScreenLogic Protocol Adapter, or the adapter can't reach the load center — usually the adapter is unplugged, or your router rebooted and handed it a new IP address.

Try this first:

• Check the Protocol Adapter (the small black box near your router) is powered
• Reboot the router, then the adapter, then reopen the app

"ERROR: Address Invalid" / can't connect remotely

The app's stored address for your system has gone stale — a DHCP reassignment after a router change is the most frequent real-world cause.

Try this first:

• While on your home Wi-Fi, delete and re-add the system in the app
• Reboot the router

Adapter present but unresponsive

The adapter has hung — a firmware lockup or power blip.

Try this first:

• Press the adapter's recessed reset button 3 times (about half-second presses) with a paperclip
• Or simply unplug it for 30 seconds

App works at home, but not away

The remote relay path is the problem — a Pentair cloud relay hiccup, router firewall, or double-NAT setup.

Try this first:

• Update the app; reboot the adapter and router
• If it persists, note your ISP and router model for the tech

IntelliCenter offline in the Pentair Home app

The panel's Wi-Fi link is down — local control at the panel still works. Weak Wi-Fi at the equipment pad is very common; the pad is usually far from the house.

Try this first:

• Re-run Wi-Fi setup at the outdoor panel screen if it shows signal
• Consider a Wi-Fi extender near the pad
