Jandy JXi & LXi Heater Fault Codes: Check Ign, High Limit & More

This guide explains every documented Jandy JXi and LXi heater fault message — plus the ignition-module LED blink codes — with the checks that are safe to do yourself before you call. CHECK FLOW / FAULT-NO FLOW — the heater isn't seeing enough water

The water pressure switch inside the heater has detected insufficient flow, so the heater refuses to fire. Per Jandy's JXi and LXi manuals, the most common causes are a pump that's off or not primed, a dirty filter, closed or misaligned valves, or a variable-speed pump running below the heater's minimum flow rate.

Try this first:

• Confirm the pump is running and fully primed.
• Empty the pump and skimmer baskets, then clean or backwash the filter.
• Confirm every valve on the suction and return lines is open.
• If you have a variable-speed pump, raise the speed while the heater is calling for heat.

FAULT-HIGH LIMIT — water inside the heater got too hot

Water temperature inside the heat exchanger exceeded the internal safety limit and a high-limit switch opened. The usual cause is not the switch itself but insufficient flow — a dirty filter or a pump running too slow. On the JXi, a stuck thermal regulator valve in the water header is a known cause worth checking before condemning sensors, a point Trouble Free Pool's JXi reference calls out specifically.

Try this first:

• Clean or backwash the filter and verify the pump speed is adequate for heating.
• From the outside only, look at the top vent for leaves, debris, or bird nests.
• Power-cycle the heater at the panel: off, wait 30 seconds, back on.

FAULT-CHECK IGN CONTROL — the heater tried to light and couldn't

The ignition control module is reporting a fault: the heater attempted ignition and failed, or the module itself has a problem. Causes range from a gas valve that's simply turned off or air in the line after a propane refill, to low gas pressure, an undersized gas line, a weak hot-surface igniter, or a failed gas valve.

Try this first:

• Confirm the external gas shutoff valve is ON.
• On propane, confirm the tank isn't empty.
• Power-cycle the heater once.

FAULT-SHORTED H2O SENSOR / FAULT-OPEN WATER SENSOR — temperature sensor circuit fault

The water temperature sensor circuit is reading shorted (SHORTED) or disconnected (OPEN). Per Jandy's service documentation this points to a failed sensor, chafed or corroded sensor wiring, or a loose connection at the power interface board — all of which live inside the cabinet.

Try this first:

• Power-cycle the heater once. That's the only safe homeowner step for this code.

FAULT-HIGH FLUE TEMPERATURE (JXi) — exhaust running too hot

Flue gas temperature exceeded its limit-switch setting. The JXi manual attributes this to restricted airflow or a blocked vent — bird and insect nests are called out specifically — a fan not running or running slow, broken tubing, or a sooted heat exchanger.

Try this first:

• From the outside only, look at the vent and top of the heater for obvious obstructions.
• Make sure the required clearances around the heater aren't blocked by pool toys, planters, or vegetation.

FAULT-FUSELINK/FIELD (LXi) — flame or heat escaped where it shouldn't. Stop now.

Per the LXi manual's service codes, the roll-out fusible link (~152 °C) or vent-temperature limit (~240 °C) safety has opened. Causes include flame roll-out, a blocked heat exchanger, a loose connection in the safety circuit, or a failed switch. There are no homeowner checks for this code.

FAULT-PUMP (status line) — not actually a fault

Per the JXi manual, this is a status message, not an error: the filter pump is off while the heater is programmed in Maintain Temp mode. The manual lists it as "no service required; normal operation."

Try this first:

• Turn the pump on, or simply wait for its schedule to start it.

Ignition Control LED Blink Codes

Both the JXi and LXi also report faults as LED blink patterns on the ignition control module. Read them through the access-panel window only — never open the cabinet to get a better look.

Continuous ON — ignition control fault

The ignition module itself is reporting an internal fault. There are no homeowner checks for this pattern.

1 flash — air flow fault

The blower or air pressure switch circuit isn't proving airflow. The JXi manual attributes air-flow faults to a fan not operating or running slow, alongside vent obstructions.

Try this first:

• From the outside only, check the vent for obstruction — nests and debris are the common culprits.

2 flashes — flame detected with NO call for heat. Turn it off and call now.

3 flashes — ignition lockout (three failed attempts)

The heater tried to light three times and locked out (a soft lockout — it automatically retries after about an hour). The underlying causes mirror FAULT-CHECK IGN CONTROL: gas supply, igniter, or gas valve.

Try this first:

• Verify the gas valve is on and, on propane, that the tank has fuel.
• Power-cycle the heater once and let it retry.
